On a ranch in the hills above Ojai,California
Be a part of an historic meeting of two herding cultures--Tuareg and Cowboy
4 PM • Opening--get acquainted appetizers and no host Martini bar.
• African or Cowboy attire encouraged--Turbans will be available--have a Tuareg tie your turban Tuareg style. Wear walking shoes--this festival is in the "bush".
• Drink tea, "the whiskey of the desert", and listen to music and stories told by the Tuareg in a colorful, handstitched authentic leather nomad’s tent from the Sahara
• Browse the tented bazaar filled with Tuareg jewelry, leatherwork & nomadic embroideries.
•Films of Saharan Adventures and projects of the Nomad Foundation.
• Exhibition of traditional nomadic arts.
• Exhibition of the newest paintings of nomadic people by Leslie Clark
• Artists will be on site painting the festival and the Tuareg en plein air. Paintings will be sold by silent auction.
• Exhibition of paintings of Almoustapha--a Tuareg artist and teacher who wants to sell his paintings to feed the children at his school at Ekirkwi, newly adopted by the Nomad Foundation.
• Animal market--buy a goat, sheep, donkey, cow or camel for a nomad.
• Roping contest. Learn to rope and win a prize!
5:30 PM • Donkey Races--THE TUAREG vs. THE COWBOYS--place your bets
6 PM • Delicious dinner nomad style: Spit roasted lamb, Toguela (bread baked in the sand like in the desert), Couscous.
7PM • Silent Auction of paintings created on the day of the festival.
8 PM • Finish the evening under the stars dancing to the Saharan Blues of Tidawt
This festival will help raise money for the Center for Nomadic Life
and assist the nomads affected by the insecurity in Niger. It will give the Tuareg in this country the opportunity to celebrate in their traditional way at a moment when this is not possible in their own beloved country of Niger, due to political problems.
