Cereal banks $ 2002 Emergency Famine relief $4,135

In 2005 we created 6 cereal banks. They are a way of assuring a constant priced food supply available locally at the remote camps. This involves stocking the millet, buiding the storage house (done by the community), and managing the sales and restocking of the grain. All the cereal banks created in 2005 are functioning well in 2006 so we have obtained funding through a Rotary grant to expand the original pilot program and add 10 new communities. Above, women of Imalole construct their storage house and the women of Awezegrene who manage the stock. The expenditures in 2006 were to provide training for the future management of cereal banks which should be self-sustaining. For other food related projects see Gardens--below.

EDUCATION
|
Four schools $16,913
In 2006 we supported fully or partially, four nomadic schools. Aboye, Ojai, Ehalgene and Tedebouk. In 2007 we will add Imalole and build and support the school at Alow. Support includes constuction of a temporary school house, school furniture and supplies, teachers salary, school lunches and cook's salary. We also funded the transportation for the school inspector to visit the remote nomadic schools to better include them in the state educational system. The children are very bright and motivated--we need to start constructing permanent buildings.

Co-operatives $10,056 Herds $18,160
Economic Development/Microcredit $12,839 Gardens $8,450

Ehalgene, Alow and Awezegrene Leatherworking Co-operatives

Ojai and Foudouk embroidery, and Aboye Basketry Co-ops

After serious droughts, it is very difficult to find replacement animals for herders who have lost herds because so many animals die there are none for sale. This year we established a foundation herd of 40 cows and 160 sheep ( branded NF , above center, upside down--oops) which we will feed during times of drought so we are able to help herders who have lost their herds. We have also started three animal fodder banks which will function as cereal banks to help animals survive during droughts. We started a vaccination program which will be expanded next year to vaccinate 10,000 head.

Economic development projects include food for work programs which allowed Aboye to build a dam to halt desertification, microcredit to start food co-operatives, purhase of carts to help in construction projects etc.

We have started two experitmental gardens at Indoudou and Ingall to test agricultural techniques with the goal of establishing gardens at nomad's home wells and training them in irrigation and management of rotation of crops of alfalfa to improve herd health and vegetables to improve human nutrition.

HEALTH
|
Medical chests and emergency evacuations $1,788
Our main health focus in 2006 besides emergency evacuations was the distribution of donated multivitamins, iron and medical chests for the schools. This has cut the incidence of death in childbirth in regions low in iron, improved health and attendance in the schools and punctuality--the children arrive by 8:00 AM or they will miss out on their chewable vitamin. Other reports are paralysis and blindness cured! Belief in the power of the vitamins can work miracles.

Distribution of Medicine chests at Tedebouk, Ehalgene, Ojai

Distribution of vitamins in camps and at Health Clinic Ingal and Injaghane

TRANSPORTATION
|
$21,781
None of these projects would be possible in these remote areas without transportation. This year we recieved a very generous donation from TEAM NISSAN of Oxnard of a new Nissan Patrol. The donation of 2/3 the cost of the car from TEAM NISSAN was then completed by a generous grant from Rotary club and here is our wonderful new car at work. Our transportation costs should go way down next year.

CULTURAL PRESERVATION
|
$18,957
Included in this cost was a fundraising tour of the Tuareg group Tidawt. They performed at many fundraising events, brought their uniquely tuareg music to an American audience, earned some money for themselves and our foundation representative Sidi (which we paid in lieu of salary). Their tour generated over $52,000 for the foundation.

And they finished off their tour by recording at Capitol Records with the Rolling Stones!

To encourage the continuation of Tuareg traditions we present the prize to the winner of the camel race, and the best traditional costume for camel, man and woman at the annual nomadic festival of Afoukada.
