WORK
A nomad’s work is his herd. So many animals died during the droughts of 2005, that the herds are greatly diminished. They need replacement animals and food to sustain the animals. Animal food banks work as the cereal banks do, providing a supply of emergency feed supplements during the annual dry season.

We have purchased more than 500 animals over the years for the Wodaabe and Tuareg herd replenshment. But after a severe drought it is difficult to find animals to replace those that died. We are in the process of establishing a Nomad Foundation herd which we will feed in times of drought so that the surviving animals will be available to replace herds after crises when no other animals are available.

FOOD FOR WORK
The Tuareg community of Aboye came to us with a plan to reclaim an area of forest in the process of desertification. They wanted to build a dam to retain the water that rushes by in the rainy season. To facilitate their accompishing this great idea we paid each man one bowl of millet for each day of work.

Animal food bank for the Wodaabe at Amateltel. Every year during the long dry season, the herds are weakened and even die due to the lack of nutrition in the pasture. We have a fund to supply animal food to the local population for sale. The purchase price is then reinvested to supply the food for the following year.
NEW PROJECTS WE NEED YOUR HELP
As the nomadic lifestyle is threatened it is becoming necessary for nomadic people to diversify their economic activities. The home base wells are a fixed location where it is possible for the population who stays there can start a garden. If there is enough water in the well which is often the case, a solar pumping system could enable to population to irrigate a plot of land to grow food for themselves and their animals and for sale to supplement their income. This would also relieve the women and men from the arduous a long work of drawing water so that they would improve their health and have time to work in other pursuits to earn a living.

Presently the market for animals has changed and is being controlled by wealthy business interests who can afford to ship the animals to the borders of Algeria and Nigeria for sale where the price is much higher. It is our goal to put this market back in the hands of the nomads by purchasing a truck and creating co-operatives who will pool their animals and take them to the most lucrative sales point. They would pay for the gas with sales from their animals, but we would like to provide the truck. The truck could serve the foundation cereal banks and greatly reduce the cost of transportation of grain, animal food, and materials for digging wells.

Every year in the dry season prices of grain go sky high and animals give less milk to sustain the population. Often animals die from starvation or sickness brought on by malnutrution. Feeding the aimals is as important as feeding the people because if an animal dies the family loses its means of support. Our animal food bank fund goes to feeding and saving the lives of the animals during the times of crisis.
